William W. Warner Civil War letters and map, 1861-1863.

This collection contains letters from and to Captain William W. Warner dating from September 1861 through August 1863. The Captain's letters to his father Horatio Warner--and other family members--mention the departure of the 12th Iowa Infantry from "Camp Union" (Dubuqe, Iowa), his imprisonment and attempted prison escapes following the Battle of Shiloh, a Rebel prisoner escort to Ohio, and activities preceding his injury at Vicksburg. The correspondence also includes one letter from Capt. Warner to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton recommending David B. Henderson for a paymaster position, a letter from David B. Henderson, and a letter from Governor Samuel Kirkwood. Also donated with these letters was a map of "Camp Union" (Dubuque, Iowa) hand-drawn in pencil by William W. Warner. Map is housed in manuscripts oversize storage.

Born in Old Deer, Scotland on March 14, 1840, David Bremner Henderson emigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Winnebago County, Illinois, in 1846. They moved to Fayette County, Iowa. The family lived in what became known as Henderson Prairie a few miles west of Postville. William W. Warner (Clermont, Iowa) was Captain of the 12th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company C, from October 1861 through December 1863. Warner--an Ohio native--was a top scholar in his senior year at Upper Iowa University when he enlisted. Along with David B. Henderson, he recruited and organized the 12th Infantry regiment.
